«Depuis qu’il existe un intérêt pour l’art africain, on constate que l’identité des créateurs ou des premiers possesseurs de ces objets est occultée, presque toujours absente d’ouvrages se voulant seulement esthétiques. Cette absence notable porterait à douter de l’existence même des auteurs et possesseurs de ces objets, reconditionnés en oeuvres d’art anonymes par l’Occident. Ces masques perdus n’ont-ils jamais eu de maître pour les façonner et les manipuler avec amour et respect ? Aucune main attentive n’a-t-elle jamais lissé le kaolin sur une face avant de la sécher à la flamme d’une torche d’okoumé ? Et leurs départs, aucunes larmes, aucuns regrets, ne les auraient donc accompagnés ? Tous ces objets, orphelins dans les vitrines des musées et dans les collections privées ont des familles d’origine, que ceux qui les ont adoptés ont choisi trop souvent d’ignorer, par confort. Ces hommes et ces femmes ont des visages que ce carnet de voyage voudrait faire revivre, même si c’est tard. Ces visages et ces regards sont aussi ceux de leurs masques, ils se ressemblent, ils sont indissociables.
